Danny Ainge already back in NBA with fancy new title with Jazz

Danny Ainge is back in the NBA. The former Boston Celtics executive retired the team’s President in June, but clearly felt the urge to get back involved in an NBA front office. According to Adrian Wojnarowski, Ainge has accepted a role with the Utah Jazz to become the organization’s alternate governor and CEO Jazz of basketball.

As Wojnarowski reports, Ainge will be overseeing basketball operations for the Jazz, while current general manager Justin Zanik will retain his position within the front office.
Since leaving the Celtics, Ainge has been living with his family in Salt Lake City, so the decision to step into Jazz’s front office was a logical choice. In fact, just a week ago, Ainge told NBC that he “wasn’t closing the door” on a return to the NBA. Clearly, he knew a bit more than he was letting on in that interview, as he now finds himself in a cushy new position with a fancy new title — alternate governor is a new one for us.
Ainge served as the Boston Celtics’ president from 2003-2021, but stepped down after his 19-year run with the team, who replaced him with former head coach Brad Stevens. Just a few months after relinquishing his role in Boston, Ainge has already found himself a new job within the NBA, and he’ll have the opportunity to try and bring a ring to Utah, a team that has fallen short of its ultimate goal so many times in the past.
Don’t be surprised if the Jazz become very active ahead of the NBA trade deadline this year, because knowing Ainge, he’ll have some ideas in mind on how to get Utah over the hump.
